Missoula Valley Recycling
Residential Sorting Guidelines


PAPER PRODUCTS
Newspaper Includes inserts and ads that come with the paper, unprinted newsprint, and “groundwood paper (has visible fiber flecks, typical of recycled paper products). Keep separate from magazines and office paper.
Glossy paper Magazines and catalogues and glossy paper. Keep separate from newspaper and office paper.
General paper Includes all junk mail, white and colored computer, ledger, tablet, copy paper, envelopes and windowed envelopes. No tissue paper, napkins, food wrappers, flourescent paper and no glossy.
Corrugated Cardboard Boxes must be open at seams, and folded flat. No waxed boxes
Brown paper bags/non-corrugated cardboard Brown and gray colors like cereal boxes, tablet paper backs and cardboard egg cartons. Flatten and stack in a brown paper bag. NO white cardboard like butter boxes and frozen food boxes.
Phone books   Keep separate from other paper products.
OTHER RECYCLABLE ITEMS
Aluminum
cans, food trays, clean aluminum foil.
Place in container or bag within container (do not tie bags).
MAY CRUSH
No heavily soiled aluminum foil. Keep separate from steel/tin cans.
Steel/tin cans Rinse food cans and place in container or bag within container. Include metal lids from glass bottles and jars. NO spray cans, paint cans, coat hangers. Keep separate from aluminum cans!
Plastic Type 1
clear plastic such as pop bottles
bottles only
(neck is smaller than the base)
Remove lids, rinse well, crush and keep separate.
NO bags, buckets, tubs such as yogurt or margarine containers, trays, or lids. Make sure the recycling triangle with a 1 in the middle is on the bottom of the container!

Plastic Type 2
opaque plastic such as milk jugs
bottles only
(neck is smaller than the base)
Remove lids, rinse well, crush and keep separate.
NO bags, buckets, tubs such as yogurt or margarine containers, trays, or lids. Make sure the recycling triangle with a 2 in the middle is on the bottom of the container!

Colored Plastic Type 2
colored plastic such as shampoo or detergent bottles
bottles only
(neck is smaller than the base)
Remove lids, rinse well, and keep separate.
NO bags, buckets, tubs such as yogurt or margarine containers, trays, or lids. Make sure the recycling triangle with a 2 in the middle is on the bottom of the container!

Styrofoam packing "peanuts" Place in a clean plastic bag.
Tie top of bag securely!
NO Styrofoam food trays or other Styrofoam materials. Peanuts must be clean and reusable.

Separate by type and place each type in a separate container. No mixing! It only takes a small amount of materials in the wrong place to contaminate an entire load. If you have questions please call our office at 543-2972.
